Places to visit in Port of Spain
1.
Reed Primate
Forest Reserve, Tobago
Rich in biodiversity, the Ridge Forest Reserve is the oldest legally
protected forest in the Western Hemisphere. The reserve is home to more than
half of the island's bird species, including the blue-backed manakin, common
grouse, and many species of hummingbird. Walking through the green foliage, you
can also spot frogs, lizards, snakes and butterflies. The path through the
reserve from north to south, near the eastern tip of Tobago, is one of the most
scenic ways to see the forest. At the top of the hills are hiking trails and
freelance guides. You can also buy some Guest houses in trinidad.
2.
Fort King
George and Tobago Museum, Tobago
Built in the 1770s and overlooking Scarborough Bay, Fort King George
offers a good view of the town and park-like tranquility with some fine trees.
Still surviving are remnants of the original brick and stone walls, an early
prison, officers' mess, several cannons, and a lighthouse. Fort King George is
the most preserved fort on the island. Also on the grounds, the Museum of Tobago
displays collections of antique maps, African art, Amerindian artifacts, coins,
and shells.
3.
Pointe-a-Pierre
Wildfowl Trust, Trinidad
Amidst an oil refinery may seem like an odd place for a nature retreat,
but this is one of the best bird watching spots in Trinidad. Surrounded by lush
tropical foliage, this 30-hectare sanctuary includes an interpretive center and
nature trails along lily-covered lakes, where you can spot species such as
scarlet ibises, dull-black whistling ducks, and white-cheeked bats. The
Pointe-a-Pierre Wildfowl Trust protects the reserve and works on rehabilitation
and captive breeding programs for endangered species.
